The word 'genre' is the French translation of 'type'. We use this word to categorise specific media texts into groups that not only help producers and editors to use code and conventions that suit their media text, it helps the audience to sub-consciously determine the type of their favourite media text. Over the past decades, film genres have spanned and created many sub-genres. (Some have even developed into hybrids, a type of sub-genre that stands out on its own).
